Governor's Bay

One of the places where we go often for a walk is Governor's Bay, a little town on the other side of the hills. We don't live far from Dyers Pass, a road over the hills. When you come down the hill on the other side you enter Governor's Bay. It is south of Lyttelton. Governor's Bay is one of the earliest settlements in New Zealand. It owes its name to Governor Sir George Grey. He welcomed the colonists in Lyttelton in 1850
One of the great things about living in Christchurch is that the winter has mostly clear days Eventhough it is cold it looks like a summerday and with all that beauty you can make nice pictures.
The jetty in Governers bay is so long because of the shallow waters at the end of the harbor and has recently needed to be lengthened because of the silt build up.
As you can see this boat doesn't get anywhere. That's how low the waterlevel is on this side.
While we walked alongside the water on the right side you saw several formations of this in the rocks. Natures art

  4. Oh your photos are all great.

Winter here is the same as yours. Except for the chill in the air, you wouldn't think it's winter as the sun is up and the weather is clear.

  9. The one of Governers bay and the one after that of the mud bound sailboat are amazing. On some history documentary I saw spoke about how some ancient harbors that were used during Rome years and earlier are now miles from the sea due to silt building up.

By chance were these pictures taken at low tide.

  13. Lovely photos! It looks a really lovely place. And that rock formation is really strange - might it have been formed by water dripping and running around?

  16. The view from the Port Hills is amazing, The Alps and Christchurch on one side and then as you go over the hill and see the Bay in all it's splendour. Have only been there in summertime but hopefully I will visit one day in the winter. Thanks for sharing these photos, really took me back to earlier this year.

  20. Hi Marja, I love your NZ photos! The last one is very peculiar and interesting. I have never seen anything like that. Is it a kind of fossil?
Thanks for the visit! I had not seen the castle either. This was the first time. At X-mas the castle will be open to the public.
