People of canterbury NZ - Stop Fracking

I read the following at Fiona's blog:

"Fracking, or Hydraulic Fracturing, has been linked to earthquakes, pollution and damage to aquifers. Two gas exploration fracking permits have been published, that cover a large part of the seismically active Canterbury area as we already struggle with thousands of aftershocks, displaced people, lost CBD, and changes to our way of life. I am frankly appalled that permission to do this would be given when both the UK and USA have admitted that it can cause earthquakes in active regions. There are also risks to our aquifer water supply and evidence of pollution from the chemicals used in the process. Please look at some of these articles and get behind fighting to prevent this happening. " Read more at Four paws and Whiskers

People of Canterbury, Christchurch this will affect you all. Please help to stop this madness. Go to Fiona's blog. Inform yourself and join one of the online groups or sent a letter or spread the information. We have gone through enough. Don't let them do the Fracking in Canterbury.

  1. This is such an important issue and I’m glad you are highlighting it on your blog, Marja. The situation has also been of concern in BC. It is incredible how uninformed we can be of the risks of this type of tampering with the natural environment, especially in earthquake prone areas.

  2. Fracking hell! I can't believe the stupidity - or greed!? Thank you for raising this. I had heard about the possibility that there is oil and gas under Canterbury - but did not know the exploration was so far ahead. We must stop it somehow.

Here in the States there is a documentary in which a guy who lives near a fracking site can put a match to the water coming out of his facet and have it explode.

But of course the oil and natural gas people swear up and down its not the fault of fracking.

  4. If there is any chance at all that "fracking" could cause an earthquake, they should definitely stop immediately or at least do a comprehensive survey into its effects before it is too late.
Hope the community stands up and forces the authorities to reconsider their permit approvals.

  7. Hi Marja .. 'fracking' is just such a great word .. it's appalling terrible it applies to something that might tip various balances in Nature's Crust to do something very unexpected.

I know that the English are partly on to it here .. and hope that the huge areas in the States get stopped ..

Good luck for a change of mind .. all the best - Hilary
