Demolition Radio Network House

Spectacular demolition of the Radio Network House in Christchurch City

This morning at 8pm it took 60 kilograms of explosives for the demolition of the Radio network House, a 14 story building in Christchurch. My husband woke up from a bomb like sound but I slept through it. Another building gone.

On Trade Me, an online auction side, you could bid for the chance to push the button and implode the building. A man from Christchurch won the bid with $26,000.00. This amount will go to the restoration of  the Isaac Theatre Royal. The man didn't press the button himself  but gave the chance to 6 year old Jayden, who has cancer. His push on the button resulted in the building coming down nicely without damaging any nearby buildings.

  1. A spectacular demolition and photo. I saw it on TV also. Amazing that a building could crumble so fast.

  3. I like how you were able to sleep through the noise, Marja. These implosions cause quite a blast. It seems odd how something that can take so long to build up can take such little time to go down. But now you have me curious about someone near and dear who has stretched their wings and flown!

  5. Don't worry about sleeping through it. I have lived in Adelaide, South Australia for 46 years and there have been a few minor earthquakes mainly at night. When everyone talked about them in the morning I had to admit I had slept through them untroubled.

  6. Saw a show on how precise they need to be in placing the explosives inside to bring a building safely down. Its quite the science.

  7. It was kind of the winner to give what he had paid so much for, away, and I hope little Jayden enjoyed the experience.
I would never, myself, want to press the button to demolish a building - it would make me sad. But the exception would be if the building had bad memories, so in the case of this building, I would probably feel different about it.

  8. I enjoyed looking at all your past posts and your trip back home. It is nice to have a large family to greet you. I only have a second cousin left in France as my family was not large – I wish my mother had not been a only child like me. Isn’t it amazing how quickly a huge building can come down.

  9. I saw that on TV. It is a shame so many buildings have to be destroyed.

  11. What a great way to fundraise. I take it the building couldn't be salvaged. That fisheye view of the city really says something about the damage you have sustained from the earthquakes.
