Opening 2015 with work and philosophy

The last couple of weeks my husband has been busy cutting down 24 trees from a Macrocarpa hedge
I have helped out in the weekends and although it was physically hard work I enjoyed it somehow. Most of the work is done. We get a nice wooden fence so hubby doesn't fall through the hedge anymore with his electric saw. The hedge was dead on one side so it became dangerous to trim it at the top. Above is a picture of the neighbours wood cutter he fixed today (even though it was 37 degrees) The wood is going to be cut up for the log burner. We won't be cold this winter.

In my free time left I red two great books :
Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
and my all time favourite now
Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder.
It is an ingenious novel, which also contains about 3000 year of philosophy in a nutshell. I still have 160 pages to go from the 520. I am a slow reader so that will still take some time.

All the photo's underneath are from around or from nearby our house and the quotes are from both
books.

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.”
Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

“A state that does not educate and train women is like a man who only trains his right arm.”
Jostein Gaarder Sophie's World

"I believe there is something of the divine mystery in everything that exists. We can see a sparkle in a sunflower or a poppy. We sense more of the unfathomable mystery in a butterfly that flutters from a twig- or in a goldfish swimming in a bowl. But we are closest to God in our own soul. Only there can we become one with the greatest mystery of life. In truth in very rare moments we can experience that we ourselves are that divine mystery."  Plotinus
Sophy's World by Jostein Gaarder

Your conscience is the measure of the honesty of your selfishness. Listen to it carefully.
Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

"The activity of the artist is like playing, and man is only free when he plays, because than he makes up his own rules" Schiller
Sophie's World

"Man bears the whole universe within himself and comes closest to the mystery of the world
by stepping inside himself"   Novalis
Sophie's World

"One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing" Socrates
Sophy's World

A Happy New Year to all of you.
My friend Peggy had a word to lead her in the New Year
I have a symbol and that is the Key. There will be doors closed and new doors will open in 2015. What's behind them remains a mystery, but isn't mysterie  intriguing. It makes you feel alive as you need all senses to experience the new.

The key is  a symbol of liberation, knowledge, mysteries and initiation
The books I have been reading fit in quite well with this symbol. I have to agree with
Socrates however that the more you know the more you realise you don't know much.

  1. Dat is een heel werk zo'n heg weghalen, wij hebben dat ook een paar jaar geleden gedaan en een schutting ervoor in de plaats gezet.Wij hadden geen"wood cutter" helaas.

  2. What a huge job cutting down all those trees. In an era when staring into screens is the norm, physical labor is satisfying and harkens to the days of old. Also, what a fascinating key you display and the book quotes great incentive to get excited about the unknowable future. May the doors you open in 2015 present you with the best of life!

  3. Hello Marja

I loved reading these words of wisdom and the beautiful photographs. You have been working very hard with the fence and cutting wood. It will be all worthwhile. I love the symbol of the key and Pegg's words.
Wishing you a very happy New Year

  4. Nice to catch up after the holidays Marja. It's so satisfying having a full wood-shed. I also had someone cutting some fallen trees over the summer. The wood is nice and dry.

  6. Hi Marja
Your photos and the quotes are inspiring! I definitely must read Sophie's World. As you know I have already read "Illusions" and I am presently re-reading the book again.

  7. What gorgeous photos and inspirational words!! The one about Family is so very very true. I think 2015 will be a good year, but I think every year is a good year. I am looking for a job at the moment and I find it quite exciting, wondering what adventure in the work force I will embark on next. 37 is far too hot, poor you, bet you melted that day.

  8. I like all your quotes, especially the one about the state has to educate women... Sad that is still necessary to say this.
I really love to symbol to open the new year! Have a happy New Year.

  12. Hi Marja,
I love the photo with the rainbow - I saw that rainbow too. It was a double one and an atmospheric golden light all around. The key symbol is a good one - many layers of meaning that I hope will be revealed as the year goes by. (I hope this comment makes it to your blog!! ;o)
