Birdling's Flat

3,218 people are now known to have died in a massive 7.8 earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday. It is an absolutely horrific situation. Thousands have slept outside and the devastation is enormous. Our thoughts are with Nepal.  If you can... give.

We spend the Sunday at  at Birdling's Flat, a settlement  close to lake Ellesmere. Birdling's Flat also refers to the pebble beach that is part of Kaitorete Spit. William and a young friend went fishing (the hunters) and I collected stones (the gatherer)

Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.”

We visited some friends there and had a lovely lunch and a magnificient view

It was a pleasure to do the dishes seeing this

Let’s not travel to tick things off lists, or collect half-hearted semi-treasures to be placed in dusty drawers in empty rooms. Rather, we’ll travel to find grounds and rooftops and tiny hidden parks, where we’ll sit and dismiss the passing time, spun in the city’s web, ‘til we’ve surrendered, content to be spent and consumed. I need to feel a place while I’m in it.

  1. It was heartbreaking news to hear about the massive earthquake in Nepal. Mother nature can be so cruel.
Then I see your beautiful photos taken on your Sunday outing and delight in how beautiful Mother nature can be!
That Richard Bach quote speaks volumes......I must read his book again.

That's exactly what I like to do. I love finding out of the way places and just sit and think.

  6. It is such a striking contrast … the serene beauty in our world and the chaotic disasters. I like that you included the link to give. I gave a little through the Canadian Red Cross believing that every little prayer and bit of money counts for Nepal.

  8. The Nepal horror just gets worse. How awful for those poor people.
Love the shot of the white birds against that super coloured background of green sea and grey sky. Great quotes too.

  9. Such beauty and freedom in the scenery, and such tragedy in Nepal.

  10. Your two pictures of birds flying are truly outstanding. The beauty of these birds flying in the peaceful sky – then we remember how nature can be also so cruel. The devastation and pain in Nepal is terrible and they will need us for a long time to help them recover.
