Update from my corner of the world

Lots of things happening here but I still managed to catch some beauty and read some great poems.

A friend from Williams work made this gorgeous fish from driftwood for us. I love it
 Thank you so much Susan

We have been busy again. Second sleeping room renovated. It has a new false ceiling, wallpaper, windows and walls painted, new curtains and the floor is varnished. The curtains for the small window still have to be shortened.

A walk along the Heathcote river (Cracroft)

Some autumn colours. It is one more month till winter and it hasn't been to bad up till now.

While writing this we had an earthquake. It has become a habit to guess how strong it is and than check on GeoNet. So I checked. I thought it was a 3.5 but wow it was a 6.3 and it was 40 km NW of Kaikoura which is about 180 km from here. I hope the people in Kaikoura are all right. See how far it travels. Can you imagine what it does when the major Alp fault line goes off? It runs along the Southern Alps that runs almost the entire length of the South Island. But maybe let's not. Reminds me of updating our survival pack as we drank all the water and the torches are on the wrong place etc. Yes NZ is on shaky grounds.

The view from my kitchen window. One morning I had to run outside to catch this gorgeous
rainbow. In the future they are going to build houses on that part in the name of progress.

A beautiful poem which speaks to me at the moment:

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken
By Rainer Maria Rilke

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that what no one has dared to wish for

may for once spring clear

without my contriving.
If this is arrogant, God, forgive me,
but this is what I need to say.
May what I do flow from me like a river,
no forcing and no holding back,
the way it is with children.
Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,
these deepening tides moving out, returning,
I will sing you as no one ever has,
streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.

  1. Lovely photos and lovely words from the South Island. The fish is awesome! And the new bedroom is very nice. I was in New Plymouth at the hospital for some tests and felt the earthquake today.

  3. You always have such uplifting posts Marja. I love visiting your blog and being amazed by your photos, quotes and stories. That is a gorgeous driftwood fish and looks terrific on your new fence. The renovated bedroom is fabulous, I remember seeing it, in a state of disrepair!
Autumn is a beautiful time of year, a photographers delight with it's warm colours.
    Keep shining my dear friend.

  4. Just now listened to the song “NZ is boring” (previous post) and could not help smiling all the way through knowing NZ is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. It is a place where you can happily get into the swing of things, Marja. :)

These earthquakes are always a threat and a worry. I am in the South but there was a 6.1 off the North West Islands of BC today … thankfully no one was hurt. I wish we would stop pounding the earth with bombs and weapons as I think this does nothing to help the stability of our world.

  5. The view from my kitchen window.

My grandmother used to say there was a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow when I was very young. It's silly really but back then since I was about four or five years old I believed her.

  6. I was driving my big truck at the time not all that far away from epicenter of a 7.1 in the Los Angeles area during the summer of '88, and I did not feel a thing. The only reason I became aware of it was from the local radio station I was listening to. Alas, when I went to look it up just now, I found that it is recorded as just a 4.7. So, that might explain why I did not feel anything other than the normal rocking and rolling of the truck going down the highway, but I would rather hang onto my recollection of it being a 7.1, if you don't mind.

  7. Hi Marja - you seem to be safe ... but the quake in Nepal is terrifying ... there's no controlling nature and earthquakes ... take care - cheers Hilary

  10. That fish is awesome, and the bedroom looks great. Is the wallpaper printed with newspaper clippings?

  11. Beauty, poems and a rainbow, how delightful. And the fish is great, although the earthquake must have been unnerving.
