Mahatma Gandhi

I feel more than in one way blessed to live in New Zealand. A statue of one of the greatest men in history was given to Wellington and placed at the railway station in October of last year.

The Indian Council for cultural relations gave it on behalf of the Indian people for "the commitment of the people of New Zealand for setting an example to the world of a tolerant, open and inclusive society". (hmmm not always) But still it is a huge honour.

For me, the different religions are beautiful flowers from the same garden,or they are branches of the same majestic tree. Therefore, they are equally true, though being received and interpreted through human instruments equally imperfect.

  2. Marja, I love the inscription--that democracy must be "informed and enlightened." So true if a democracy is to avoid being dysfunctional.

  5. Yes, democracy is the best system - just sad when it gets corrupted - like in the USA now.
Gandhi is a hero of mine.

  8. Wish that the sentiments about religion were true. Instead, mankind has used their points of view on their religion to fight many wars in history and continue to do so today. I think we would be better off if we all turned away from it.

  9. I agree Monique

    It's a great saying

He is somebody to be very proud of chitra. Welcome to my blog

Hopefully things turn for the good Elizabeth

    Thanks UL Take care

Thanks Steve I give you one now

Irene I understand that things look bad but it is only the fundamentalists who fight I find. The core in every religion is the same; basically to love others. I have met people from different religions who learn and live up to the right things in their religion and who are very tolerant.

  10. Last year I visited Raj Ghat, a beautiful park in Delhi. At the centre is a simple black marble platform with an eternal flame marking the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated following his assasination. A moving experience.

  12. Right again, Marja. Gandhi and Martin Luther King are true heroes.

  13. Interesting that dickiebo should bring up Dr. King along with Ghandi. Both were quintessential preachers and practitioners of peace, and both were shot to death.

Humans are a strange, unnerving bunch.

  15. Keith that must indeed be very special Thanks for sharing

    Thanks Deepak

Quin I wish they would too. That would be wonderful

    I agree Dickiebo

Baba I had to look up the word quintessential and found "The most perfect embodyment of something."
Which I understand as they practised what they preached. What could be better.
People are indeed a strange unerving bunch but these heroes still accomplished a lot and that makes me feel empowered.
