I struggled a bit with this one but I managed to squeeze out a poem :)
Tell Me About Respect
I took him to the attic
of human virtues.
In shadowed corners, we dusted off some,
brushed our fingers over others,
letting their quiet brilliance shine.
Then, with glistening eyes,
I cradled
in the cup of my hand,
the most dazzling of them all
Respect.
His eyes widened, curious,
as if seeing it for the first time.
I lifted a mosaic sculpture.
“Look,” I whispered,
“there’s a dark, rough fragment,
a petite, pretty piece,
a psychedelic swirl,
and a wicked, wondrous gem.
Each one is precious,
each one belongs,
each one fits
into this magnificent whole.”
“It’s the same with people,
honour each one,
for every soul has its place
in the universe.”
Some soften you with love,
some seep hope into your heart,
some build from brokenness.
Each soul is at its own stage:
one crawls as a caterpillar,
another sleeps in a cocoon of sorrow,
and one emerges,
fluttering in blissful wings.
If you soar above as a butterfly,
do not forget the leaf
where you once rested.
Wouldn’t it be gold
to land gently,
to touch wings,
and acknowledge each other?
We all matter.
Wouldn’t it be wondrous
to ignore what divides us,
to discover the ground we share,
and meet there, together?
Hold up your hands, my friend,
I pour into them
my dazzling respect,
a gift that dances
from heart to heart.
Respect is a two way deal, you must show respect to receive it yourself and accept that we are all different and others don't have to agree with us.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with every word. I tried to convey that a bit but you said that head-on
DeleteI think I like the attic of human virtues...to counter this pandora's box we live in.
ReplyDeleteThank you yes I think it would help.
DeleteLove the message, 'each soul is potentially divine'. A beautiful write Marja.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sumana
DeleteGolly. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. I have gone with you to that tiny corner, picked up a living gem, and in it saw the entire world revered. After such a gift, I can only share it. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI didn't imagine that it would have such an impact. I feel humbled. Thanks a lot
Delete"If you soar the sky as a butterfly,
ReplyDeletedon’t look down on the caterpillar
you once were. Wouldn't it be
gold, to tenderly land on its leaf
and acknowledge each other"
my favourite stanza
Happy Wednesday Marja
much love...
Thanks dear Gillena
DeleteThis was just glorious to read, the words falling on my heart like a soft summer rain. Sigh. This is very uplifting, Marja. Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Sherry
DeleteOk. I think it's fantastic the way you "squeeze" out a poem. This one is so beautiful. It's message is so comforting, so full of wisdom and good spirit. I love the idea that "each soul is in a different formative stage," These words evoke compassion and love. I like this poem sooooo much!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you so much I loved writing it but it was a slow slow squeeze.
DeleteWonderful respectful poem and a gorgeous photo, you are really talented.
ReplyDeleteHi Janneke dankewel. I am not as good as many of the others but with practice I will get there
DeleteRespect is a quality that is , sadly, lacking in today's society.
ReplyDeleteI like the very clear message of your poem: don't look down on others, be kind and respectful to them. We all have a place in this world, we all matter; let's look for connection , not division.
"We all matter" - Very important truth. Knowing this makes us all wonders. I know. Visit a Shriner Hospital for Children.
ReplyDeletehonour each one of them as
ReplyDeleteall have a place in the universe
It is being fair in one's thinking! Very true Marja. All must be accorded their due respect!
Hank
You have put it in a most tender, deep and respectful way....gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteA fabulous poem. All heart. Love the photo too.
ReplyDeleteHi Marja - wonderful ... love the thoughts expressed here ... we need to meet all at our mutual level, to acknowledge we all matter ...
ReplyDelete"Wouldn't it be
gold, to tenderly land on its leaf
and acknowledge each other."
We can all help each other so much ... in so so many ways - wonderful poem - cheers Hilary
We are all caterpillars...some don't make it to the butterfly stage for many reasons but they are all potential butterflies..and..it is not in the nature of a butterfly to look down...they just look ahead !
ReplyDelete"Know that each soul
ReplyDeletehas a different purpose "--i think, nothing can be more powerful and more important than this line! What a wonderful realisation and shift in the way to look at life!Loved it, Marja!
Though you say you struggled, your poem flowed without difficulty. I found it interesting to look and see, exactly what I thought of as respect. Or what the word meant to me.
ReplyDeleteFilled with tenderness and love. I like the mosaic cup, and the butterfly and caterpillar reference. There are those who too easily forget where they came from. This is a delight, Marja!
ReplyDelete"Know that each soul
ReplyDeleteis in a different formative stage
one is like a caterpillar and the next
one sleeps in a cocoon of sorrow
one evolved into a blissful butterfly"
MOST EXCELLENT!!!
Butterflies in the attic of human virtues. What a wonderful way of seeing and saying you offer us. None of us are complete and we all have room for change. Really like your squeezed out poem,
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
I love the way you built this, verse by verse.
ReplyDeleteAhhh "to find commonalities and connect" ...
ReplyDeleteExcellent Poem Marja.. Respect is a two way thing.. And sadly today it seems to be losing its value.. Love and Hugs my friend xxx
ReplyDeletePoem and picture go together so well. This is the verse that takes my attention:
ReplyDeleteKnow that each soul
has a different purpose
some soften you with love,
some seep hope into your heart
some build on brokenness
