Being human

Being human is being imperfect but that's a hard one to owe. How much better would it be to accept your imperfections and just be yourself and take life just as it comes.....a work in progress for me.

Being Human

Being human is living
life with intention,
like a farmer sowing seeds
like a man who dares to be perfectly
imperfect and perceives his strength,
in the mirror of what he adores
perceives his weakness,
in the mirror of what angers him
who forgives himself so he
can pass this gift to others,
whose reflected cracks
will be merged in unity
Where hands hold hands
like a string of fireflies
lightning up in sparkling display
Where the ones who see
get born into wonder as they
learn
to love themselves
and live life from the inside out

Being human is breaking
free of being held hostage
by our thoughts,
by our emotions,
by our expectations
by releasing one thread
of vibrant fibre at the time
As we’ve outgrown
this garment of living
we step barefoot
on the lush green grass
in the open field
stretching our arms
to set free this bird of control
and unrestrained we go
where the wind blows
where the stream flows
to follow the silent path of faith
in all our brokenness
as only the crescent moon
knew it was whole all along

  1. What a thought provoking post Marja.....and so well written.
I am definitely imperfect and taking life as it comes is sometimes very difficult.
Your words "Being human is learning to break free of being held hostage by our thoughts, by our emotions, by our expectations".....this I struggle with constantly, but as you said a work in progress.
    Be well my friend.

  2. How many beautiful lines here: hands hold hands like a string of fireflies and as only the crescent moon,
knows it was whole all along- both spoke out loud to me.. thank you.

  3. Fortunately in our lifetime we have the opportunity to try out many things (including the marriage, children bit) although some do the same job or live in the same place most of their lives. However the most important thing is our ability to choose, to make decisions on the path we take. As Miruspeg has said above, very thought provoking.

  4. There's so much involved in being human it's a wonder that any of us survive the experience! :)

  6. Earlier, in a comment that is lost, I posted something like this, which I can repeat because I still feel it!
This is, to me, the IDEA. I love so many of these lines and images, particularly this:
    "who forgives himselve(s?)
so he can pass this gift to others"

I love that line because it confirms the primacy of relationship. No one of us is alone. We all give, and I would rather give the capacity to forgive than almost anything else!

'we step barefoot on the lush green grass
in the open field, stretching our arms
to set free this bird of control'.

  8. I like your depiction of humanity. It made me consider how some of us are more human than others. Perhaps humanness is something that we're not just born into but we can also grow into.

  11. You have captured many aspects of being human. I think humans in general learn throughout the journey. It is my hope they learn to grow and love.

  12. and unrestraint we go
    where the wind blows,
    where the stream flows
to follow the silent path of faith

Silently one moves along keeping pace with one's own beliefs and conscience. That should be the case Marja, so as to cast away the controls!

  14. I like the idea of living life with intention. This is something that only humans can do. I also like the idea of going where the wind blows. In this poem you have really expressed so many facets of being wonderfully human!

  16. This is indeed one to contemplate. Hunans by nature are thinkers superior to animal instincts. We can eat or starve and either of these is wrapped in choice

    Much♥️love
