Finally a poem again for Poets and Storytellers united
Autumn of life
I am in the autumn of my life
spring petals long gone
the blossom still hiding in my heart
shining through the mist
Leaves are red golden now
together an anthology
of experiences caught
in a cocktail of everyday life
mixed in my mind
I now possess a few pearls of wisdom
investments monetised each day
although my inner child
still throws a tantrum
I try to soothe it
with timeless patience
to align her like a bird in flight
soaring across the horizon
to give her a wider view
to see the glowing hillsides
to see the setting sun kindle the sky
There are still a thousand clouds
and a hundred dreams left
and though the days left are less
and the dance slower
life is more graceful and thoughtful
and autumn days are filled
with fuzzy socks, walks in the woods
and complex life purified into poetry
What a beautiful read this is. As one gets older how easy it is to compare oneself with the seasons of autumn and winter.
ReplyDeleteAh, lovely. I think this is called the wisdom of age (smile).
ReplyDeleteHey there Marja,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all beautiful images and, as Robin suggests here an equally beautiful piece of heart-felt and telling writing. I'm sure this is all how we would aspire to grow older as creative spirits - with real grace. Thanks for inspired example you offer us all this morning...
I am in the earliest days of autumn... the ones where the days still mostly feel like late summer, but then night comes to remind me that I know better. I love and relate to so many parts of this poem (I want to think my inner child is too old for tantrums, but alas...) and yes, there are still some dreams to chase, even if I need to bring a sweater (and an ibuprofen or two) when I do.
ReplyDeleteI find distilling life down to poetry a good antidote too. When the fruit is ripe (and colorful), it's the best time to pick and use it. I like the cocktail of everyday, either an honoring toast or blurry whirlwind, whatever you make of it.
ReplyDelete“ … the blossom still hiding in my heart shining through the mist …” What a visually beautiful way of expressing exactly what many do feel.
ReplyDeleteif there are still walks in the woods and poetry to write, life is still good. especially if 'investments monetised each day' :)
ReplyDeletethank you for this thoughtful poem.
I love that bits of spring are still blooming inside the autumn heart (it's how I feel about me). How wise that heart must be, singing with memories of spring and dancing in autumn's arms. We live and we grow, and if we are lucky and appreciate all we get, then we live some more...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely poem ... and a reminder of the seasons we experience ... I fall into the 'late Fall' category (pardon pun) hoping I carry some of the grace you describe into Winter.
ReplyDeleteThose words touched me so much that I got emotional reading it. It triggered memories of my inner child, and has me wishing when I reach the autumn of my life, I have a few pearls of wisdom, some company, walks in the woods and complex life purified by poetry. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThink I shall save this somewhere to reread.
ReplyDeleteThere are still a thousand clouds
ReplyDeleteand a hundred dreams left
and though the days left are less
and the dance slower
Sums up the mood of the poem quite beautifully!
This is a marvelous poem. I identified with every line!
ReplyDeleteMarja, this is sooo nice!! If you are in Autumn then I am in the cold and nasty winter, where the petals have dropped and the leaves are frozen. Snowmen and sleighs have become my friends and open graves dug before the ground had frozen have become my potential nemeses. Friends by name have become aging fireplaces. NZ folk are very familiar with the very cold, bordering on the Southern Ocean, oh to up and if "at sea" be it then the Pacific Ocean or Tasmsn Sea would be warmer. (We've literally been in all three, well our ship was. The Southern again off the tip of South America.)
ReplyDelete..
Wisdom and age go together so beautifully. These are words that warm the heart!
ReplyDeleteThe Autumn of life it may be, but I still have a Spring in my step! A simply delightful poem Marja.
ReplyDeleteYour poem is dominated by a major contrast: the lady in the autumn of her life with the acquired pearls of wisdom, versus her inner child that has to be patiently and constantly soothed and calmed. Great, meaningful contrast!
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful poem Marja.
ReplyDeleteBeing in the autumn of our lives has many many advantages and you have written about them perfectly.
Perfection my friend.
Namaste

Complex life purified into poetry is worth a lot.
ReplyDeleteA cocktail of everyday life ...love this. You sound very contented in the Autumn of your life. Lovely poem !
ReplyDeleteHi Marja - this is a wonderful poem ... reminding us of what was and now is ... we're coming into Spring and I know 'the blossom still hides in my heart' (as you mention in your first verse) ... gorgeous words ... thank you - Hilary
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous last line!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by to read mine
