Angel of the night

Prompt for Poets United Rising above

I grew up in an protective environment and learned only later in life about people who are less fortunate . For example through the movie Once we were warriers I learned of lifes lived in terror.

In time, I came across some amazing people who worked with the most disadvantaged. I realised that some of the most dedicated people, were the ones who understood because they lived it. They worked tirelessly to make a difference, often with minor recognition. The transformation they went through, the difference they made, and the work they did and do is heroic and therefore I salute them.

I imagined what it means to be disadvantaged and how people would rise above

Angel of the Night

She once was invisible,
an unexplored life,
head bent low to be unseen,
dragging through miry clay.

Born to parents who drowned their demons
in devil’s water,
leaking through their pores,
evaporating into terror,
invading every corner of her world.

Fed with violence and profanities,
touched with shrewd knocks,
gazed upon by eyes spilling rage,
dressed in garments of grudge.

One day, she sank into the depth of a soul,
sensing the silence of an empty vessel
screaming to be filled with love
a mirror for the little girl within.

Her newfound empathy stirred,
offering the last grain of her love,
which blossomed in both,
initiating her into greatness.

Slowly, she tore apart
the restraints that bound her.
Lifted by a gust of wind,
renewed and light,
she rose above her past.

Now she holds space
for souls haunted by shrieking shadows,
moving through stormy days
in slow, quiet motion.

Building warm nests
where icy winds sneak through the gaps,
she has become
an angel of the night,
silent guardian of healing,
illuminating the darkness
with a gentle, steady light.

  1. Hi Marja - haunting ... after reading Wiki's review on the NZ film you mention: Once Were Warriors. Very well done ... so dark and so difficult - we have put too much on other peoples - definitely thought provoking - cheers Hilary

  2. I have seen this movie a long time ago. Will watch it again. We are indeed blessed if we have had a childhood without violence and abuse. It is good to be aware of what others have had to suffer. It makes one appreciate what we have so much more.

  3. Building a warm nest for them
in places where the icy winds
    sneak through the gaps, she
became an angel of the night..these are the people who rescue the earth.

  5. There are, indeed, angels among us and often they had troubling pasts as your prose so poignantly expressed.

  7. How i love her rise from terror to strength and compassion for others. My favourite kind of story. For i was that small girl in a violent alcoholic home, who made a similar journey.

  10. Wow: "Now she is holding space for
the souls haunted . . . ." It is more than amazing that people raised up and limited so can burst through their bandages like butterflies from cocoons. Nothing so gentle, and yet, rebirth. Brilliant poem.

  12. Such a beautiful soul of compassion....i love the line, "One day she sank in the depth of the eyes
of a soul, sensed the silence of an empty
vessel" I do think that those that have endured great hardship and strife can become more compassionate of others....of course there are others than become more bitter, but they are the ones that need the compassionate ones the most.

  13. Aah...They are the salt of the earth. It's very difficult and needs much strength to rise above the past. They are true angels with rare virtues in them. Love this ode to the angels of night. Beautiful Marja.

  14. "...building a warm nest..." It takes an insightful soul to transcend the abuse and not perpetuate it for the next generation. I wish there were more who could do this and know a better way.
