Prompt for Poets United Rising above
I grew up in an protective environment and learned only later in life about people who are less fortunate . For example through the movie Once we were warriers I learned of lifes lived in terror.
In time, I came across some amazing people who worked with the most disadvantaged. I realised that some of the most dedicated people, were the ones who understood because they lived it. They worked tirelessly to make a difference, often with minor recognition. The transformation they went through, the difference they made, and the work they did and do is heroic and therefore I salute them.
I imagined what it means to be disadvantaged and how people would rise above
Angel of the night
She used to be the invisible one.
An unexplored life, her head
bend down not to be seen
dragging through the miry clay
bend down not to be seen
dragging through the miry clay
Born to parents who drowned their
demons in devil's water, squeezed
through their pores, evaporated into terror,
invading every space of her life as they
demons in devil's water, squeezed
through their pores, evaporated into terror,
invading every space of her life as they
fed her with violence and profanities
touched her with shrewd knocks
looked at her with eyes spilling rage
dressed her in their garment of grudge
looked at her with eyes spilling rage
dressed her in their garment of grudge
One day she sank in the depth of the
eyes
of a soul, sensed the silence of an empty
vessel, screaming to be filled with love
A mirror for the little girl inside her
of a soul, sensed the silence of an empty
vessel, screaming to be filled with love
A mirror for the little girl inside her
Her newfound empathy allowed
her, to offer her last grain of love,
which started growing in both
Initiating her to greatness
Slowly she ripped up and tore
down her restraining cast. Through
renewed lightness, picked up by
a gust of wind, she rose above her past.
which started growing in both
Initiating her to greatness
Slowly she ripped up and tore
down her restraining cast. Through
renewed lightness, picked up by
a gust of wind, she rose above her past.
Now she is holding space for
the souls haunted by shrieking
shadows, moving in slow speed,
through stormy days
Building a warm nest for them
in places where the icy winds
sneak through the gaps, she
became an angel of the night
Nicely done! A beautiful piece.

DeleteHi Marja - haunting ... after reading Wiki's review on the NZ film you mention: Once Were Warriors. Very well done ... so dark and so difficult - we have put too much on other peoples - definitely thought provoking - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks yes when I saw the movie for the first time I was quite taken aback
DeleteI have seen this movie a long time ago. Will watch it again. We are indeed blessed if we have had a childhood without violence and abuse. It is good to be aware of what others have had to suffer. It makes one appreciate what we have so much more.
ReplyDeleteExactly We have so much to be grateful for

ReplyDeleteBuilding a warm nest for them

became an angel of the night..these are the people who rescue the earth.
I agree Rajani They have tru strength and virtue
DeleteBeautiful Marja, and the last verse is so heartwarming.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith
DeleteThere are, indeed, angels among us and often they had troubling pasts as your prose so poignantly expressed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maria I agree
DeleteThanks for sharing that beautiful angel, especiall in these trying times when so many of her kind would be busy in rescue and care giving
ReplyDeletehave a good Wednesday
much love...
Thanks Gillena I think they are very needed at the moment yes :)
DeleteHow i love her rise from terror to strength and compassion for others. My favourite kind of story. For i was that small girl in a violent alcoholic home, who made a similar journey.
ReplyDeleteWow Sherry and see what an amazing person you are now. I salute you
DeleteMoving and beautifully written piece. Heroic is that angel of the night!
ReplyDeleteThanks Khaya
Deletei love how you structured and wrote your poem. the message is always beautiful but i found beauty in your positioning of rhymes and syllables and such. an admirer.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much JT
DeleteWow: "Now she is holding space for
ReplyDeletethe souls haunted . . . ." It is more than amazing that people raised up and limited so can burst through their bandages like butterflies from cocoons. Nothing so gentle, and yet, rebirth. Brilliant poem.
Thanks a lot Susan
DeleteWhat a hauntingly descriptive piece. Well written, and held my rapt attention to the very end.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot
DeleteSuch a beautiful soul of compassion....i love the line, "One day she sank in the depth of the eyes
ReplyDeleteof a soul, sensed the silence of an empty
vessel" I do think that those that have endured great hardship and strife can become more compassionate of others....of course there are others than become more bitter, but they are the ones that need the compassionate ones the most.
I agree with your every word Thanks Carrie Is your last name Dutch btw
DeleteAah...They are the salt of the earth. It's very difficult and needs much strength to rise above the past. They are true angels with rare virtues in them. Love this ode to the angels of night. Beautiful Marja.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sumana Totally agree
Delete"...building a warm nest..." It takes an insightful soul to transcend the abuse and not perpetuate it for the next generation. I wish there were more who could do this and know a better way.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed very hard but I have met a few of these angels The majority as you said is not able to break the cycle
Deletejust want to add that with more love and support more can move on I have seen that as well :)
DeleteMarja, this is a most beautiful poem.. And I know that there are many such angels walking the Earth dear friend.. And while they have a hard job on their hands helping and waking up humanity to itself.. I have faith that these warriors will succeed.. We have to..
ReplyDeleteBlessings dear Marja.. I will be back later to catch up with the posts I have missed my friend..
Love and Hugs.. Sue xxx
Beautiful write expressing beautiful thoughts.
ReplyDeleteAnother super poem. Very moving too.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautifully descriptive and sensitive poem Marja .. So many souls go through trauma and then rise up through it.. And many earth angels are out there I know helping those still yet to climb..
ReplyDeleteThank you for this.. A deep meaningful poem written from your heart xxx <3
