Writing our story

We are having our second weekend in lock down. Normally I would have arrived today in the Netherlands to stay with my mother. Now I skype her everyday which she enjoys.
I have a lot more time to write at the moment. The one underneath is not quite there.  I got stuck but kept writing 😉

Writing our story

We are the shapers of life
the holders of the pen
And as we write
our story is coming through us
At times the channel shuts down
We hold our breath but
we must not stop writing

When a soul stagnates
You beg, and you bargain
You throw them words of truth
but they fail to fall on their page
Some have built a permanent
shack outside the covers
of their book

You lay down on the ground
where fear has rooted deeply
You meet them there
waiting till a seed is sprouting
bursting to freedom
waiting till vines reach for
the stars of an unveiled universe

We cheer, we support but
we can’t write their story
so let ours serve a purpose
It might change a life
Our purpose might be
to change ourselves
which might be life changing

  1. I've said it before, I write to find out what I really think and believe.

    Great poem!

    1. Yes I think your writing is a reflection of who you are

  2. How well said! Yes, if we only ever touch or move one person, it's worth it – and in fact, we reach so many more

  3. A difficult time for mothers and daughters, Marja. I video message my daughter and grandson every day, too. Having more time to write is the silver lining of this terrible pandemic, and I’ve read so many poems that speak to me – yours included. We are, indeed, holders of the pen, revealing our story in every line. I especially love:
‘You lay down on the ground
    where fear has rooted deeply
    You meet them there
waiting till a seed is sprouting
    bursting to freedom’.
    Don’t worry about getting stuck.

  5. Hi Marja - so glad you've connected regularly with your mother ... despite, so sadly, not being able to get there to catch up with family and friends. I endorse Kim's words ... we just need to be the best we can right now and always be there ... the seed will germinate - and our words will help others. All the best - Hilary

  8. This is beautiful!💘 I resonate with; "so let ours serve a purpose/It might change a life/Our purpose might be to change ourselves which might be life changing."💘

  9. Sharing our stories is a great way to inspire each other (and ourselves).

Like you, I've also been video calling more than ever. Thank goodness for that. Stay safe, Marja.

  10. This said so well things I haven't been able to. The sense of stagnation and determination were both palpable.

  11. This is truly wonderful, Marja. I really felt this as it tapped into that revolving experience we all have wanting to help, wanting to uplift, but having only the power to share, not to determine outcomes for anyone.

  12. I quite agree with the message in your poem:
The writer('shaper of life') mustn't stop writing even when the words fail him.
His writing cheers, supports, might change life.

  13. I suppose we individually decide if there is a purpose or not. I wonder if we will ever be the same again after this historic ordeal. Perhaps we will learn lessons and be better for the planet and to one another. Meanwhile, skyping really is a great tool to keep connections alive!

  18. I think it went just fine, Marja. I like it all but the list of goodies at he last is my favorite. My favorite foods, I stash away hidden chocolate. And keep a cupboard full also. :-)

  19. Well said. I think, once a person starts writing, he feels he has stories to tell and share, he's on a mission to try to change the world for the better.

  21. Marja, thank you for having this positive hope that our writing has purpose, a positive change for someone. It might happen for me, but for you... it just did.

  22. I agree sometimes what we write may change ourselves. Somehow putting feeling to paper clarifies and cleanses. Your poem is evocative!

  23. I absolutely agree, more especially with your last stanza. Thank you for these encouraging words, I will keep holding to my pen and wait patiently until it spills ink on the page. :)

  24. Yes, keep writing even when it feels you have nothing to say. There is someone waiting for your poem to reach them.
