For Monday Murals
Two parts of a mural portraying the pilgrims who arrived
in Christchurch in 1850 in Lyttleton Harbour.
This mural is on the side of Oxford Street Bridge in Lyttleton. About 800 settlers arrived in 4 ships from Europe; the Charlotte Jane and the Randolph arrived on 16 December 1850, Sir George Seymour the following day, and the Cressy on 27
December 1850.
The colonists were mostly families who were able to buy land in the new colony. These people were the leaders of Canterbury for the first years. They travelled in cabins for which they had paid 42 pounds. There were also farm workers, labourers and tradesman who made the journey in steerage for which they paid 15 pounds.
Christchurch is still one of the most English cities in NZ.
Dat is een prachtige mural. Met een interessant verhaal er bij! Nog bedankt voor je bezoek op mijn blog. Ik ga je volgen
