The prompt for Poets and Storytellers United is Fall. I took the liberty to change it as autumn is a bit alien for us now. Here in the Southern hemisphere it is Spring and the trees and flowers are bursting with colour.
The earth turns itself over
as the jar of the night is sealed
Dawn shakes dreams
from its sleeves,
and the air peels open
like an orange.
The sun peeks through
with its first light,
crawling over the hills
to set the fields alight,
to switch on lanterns
in the cherry trees,
wearing blushing crimson.
It scatters gold
across the yellow bells
with starry skirts,
and dresses trees
in fresh green
as Robins sing
their finest songs,
for their babies newly born.
The wind scribbles invitations
on passing clouds,
awaiting the footsteps
of those who hear
the secret song of Spring.
Spring for you, but Autumn for us. Lovely verse. You have a talent for this.
ReplyDeleteYour poem beautifully captures the tender awakening of the world, as if spring itself were whispering its secrets through light, song, and bloom
ReplyDeleteThat's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I too am in the Southern Hemisphere, it's a different latitude from you. In my younger years I lived in a more temperate clime, such as you seem to be describing here; now I am in the sub-tropics where we miss out on things like robins! But the new magpies are plentiful, and my frangipani should soon be in bloom.
I like your "secret song of Spring," we have them also. I love the spring, Mocking Birds from to rooftop to rooftop caling each other. I join them, you can too. Get their pitch and tone, then make this call, "Who cooks for you." They will answer you every time. Repeat, repeat, and repeat.
ReplyDeleteOurs leave and go north when things get really hot weather.
What a beautiful peach-melba sky - I love the idea of catching spring in a jar - to be savoured and enjoyed. Really quite delicious too! Jae
ReplyDeleteA lovely Spring poem, Marja, full of wonderful images and beautifully penned. Although, here in Melbourne, Winter seems to be lingering!
ReplyDeletePerfect! An enchantment. The first stanza is masterful.
ReplyDeleteI love this description. It is so visual. I could see them before my eyes.
ReplyDeleteNormally I am an Autumn fan but how you describe Spring captures the imagination in a very alluring way.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful and vivid description of spring :)
ReplyDeleteLoved the idea of clouds carrying the wind's invitations.
Found my way here from Poets and Storytellers United. Do drop by mine :)
