For when the light goes out

One day the light goes out, one day flowers will loose their petals. There is a rhythm to all that lives. There is birth, there is dead. Everything is here only temporarily. While we are here we have to make the best of it and make sure to smell the flowers.
We have been helping a client at work collecting songs and poetry for the day people will say goodbye to her. I showed her the one I would very much like to be read which I posted. I would also love music of Andrea Bocelli. Here in NZ I experienced that people had celebrations of life to celebrate the good times they had. I would love that with flowers and laughter and music.
Our client is not ready to go yet. Me neither.
It is a part of life though what is going to happen. I hope not for long as I still have so many tasks to fulfil in this life and so many things I would like to do. But we don't get to choose that day so I rather like the idea of people listening to your favourite song or poem and be a little prepared what about you?

Do not stand at my grave and weep

Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

  2. "Quiet birds in circled flight" reminds me of pigeons I raised a few years ago. Each morning I would let them out and they would circle above me, always counterclockwise about 50 feet above, to brighten the start of my day.

Since my days are numbered (cancer) I like the idea of a poem (the one you showed is beautiful and the idea of rejoining nature is appealing) and may go with that or a little speech of some sort identifying my beliefs.

  3. This is a beautiful poem. I've seen it before, and then forgot it. This time I'm going to make sure I remember. Thank you for these reflections Marja.

  4. Dutches it is indeed good we don't know when we go. Realising that we don't have all the time off the world might motivate to live a bit more concious. You have a great day.

Goatman Sorry to hear you have cancer. The poem is beautiful isn't it. I think a speech about your beliefs would appeal to me too
It is an important part of life and death I think

    Happy you like it Juliet

  5. Marja, this is a lovely post.. My sister had a close encounter with Cancer when she was 36 she had 4 young children at the time. She is now 52 and it changed her way of life.
She embraces life and lives for the Now.. And she said that when we celebrate her passing when ever that will be.. and she is intending to go no where just yet LOL.. But she wants us all to turn up to her funeral in Fancy Dress and play her favourite songs and have a party.. Because she says she is going home and will be having a Great Party :-)
Thank you for sharing and love that poem

  6. I too have many tasks to fulfil in this life and hope I get the chance to do just that.

I made a CD of my favourite songs to be played at my funeral but that was a few years ago and I think I will need to change some of the songs and add new one.

Funerals should be a celebration of life and music, poetry and photos is a wonderful way to express that.

    Beautiful post my friend.
