A friend of mine

for poets united

A Friend of Mine

Let me introduce a friend
she takes me traveling
deep into the quiet corners
of my mind.

Where I count the clouds,
where cloudy thoughts clear,
where clear streams flow,
and words begin to dance.

Some people don’t like her.
They fear she’ll infect them
with loneliness.

But she keeps out the crowd,
the noise, the endless voice
of a world tangled in sadness,
madness, and constant busyness.

I love her peaceful presence.
I snuggle up
coffee in hand,
a cat curled beside me,
a book, a pen,
some blank paper.

After a walk in the forest,
breathing in earth and light,
I find her waiting.
Oh yes, we two are quite a pair.

And now I realise:
to mend my mood,
I need to see her more often
my quiet friend,
called Solitude.

  1. Great poem, Marja!
Contrary to belief, solitude is a positive, constructive stage. It's being alone without being lonely, and it helps organizing thoughts and taking proper decisions.
It goes well with today's trend of mindfulness and awareness.
"oh yes we two are quite a pair".

  2. Your writing is so visual Marja, it is a joy to read!
I think solitude is creativity's best friend and it also sharpens awareness of small pleasures.
I concur with Duta with that delightful line "oh yes we two are quite a pair".
    Keep shining dear friend.

  7. It's often, during these solitude times, I am able to tap into a part of myself, that speaks wisdom and soul healing. That the modern world drowns out, in an ocean of noise. Only wish, more people would take the time, to do so.

  14. Your friend is my friend, too. I love that she is so wonderful at being silent while saying everything, that she is so good at allowing us to listen to our own thoughts, at inviting us to see the world without the noise of everyone else's living. She is the best! and you illustrate her best characteristics so well in your poem.
