Paper is patient

Paper is patient

Pristine white welcoming
a string of ideas
waiting for the birth
of one bead at the time
each like a little prayer on a rosary
each settling in the fertile ground
softly unfolding your truth as

Paper is patient
It doesn’t move on, nor ignore
when words shyly hide inside
when words take away your pride
as they pretend to be absent
and you silently scream
hey, I have something to say
Then turn to paper as

Paper is patient
Take time to explore
the maze in your mind
twist and turn away
from the path of daily pursuits
Don’t abandon your treasures inside
but trust them to empty sheets when you
arrive at the other side of the threshold as

Paper is patient

  1. This is so true, Marja. Paper is patient. I must admit I never thought of it this way. The availability of paper, whenever I need it, is a thing I simply taking for granted. Thank you for this reminder and beautiful homage you've paid to paper.

  2. A lovely concept, so effectively expressed with the repetitions and gradual building up of details.

  3. If the paper is patient it must be us that are the impatatient ones when the words just won't come as we want them to. Hello I have just noticed there are a few balls of screwed up paper in the waste bin!

  4. Being a little funny here, but paper tends to mock me when I use it to write. Paper doesn't let me forget my mistakes by continuing to show my totally ridiculous spelling errors and terrible grammar.

In turn my laptop babies me by automatically fixing my shortcomings.

  5. Love this. That repetition is like a warm hand on the back. :) An inspiring piece.

  6. Lovey title and line. I feel so reassured. Words like rosaries. Sometimes the paper just glares back but still it waits.

  8. Thank goodness paper has been patient with me, because goodness knows there have been moments when I take my own sweet time.

  10. With you, I celebrate the patience of paper (or, in my case, the computer screen). I'm glad we have these tools available. What would we do without them?

  11. i think the invention of paper is one of the best things that happened to us.
i still like to write on paper, the rough drafts of the work. i use the PC to work on the draft again, and to finalise it.
"Paper is patient." it reminds us to be that too. :)

  14. Ah yes, paper is patient, but the poet grows testy! My muse has been on furlough of late.

  15. They say paper absorbs everything; the good, the bad, the stupid words/phrases/paragraphs. It is patient, as you say.
It is because of its patience and absorbance that it'll never be completely abandoned by us.

  17. Hi Marja - that white spaces ... just waits to be filled, or doodled over ... as DUTA implies - paper knows all ... one's thoughts as the scatter across the page ... well done - love it - take care - Hilary

  18. You are a master with words, they come they go they turn and then can go on your paper. Are young people still using paper though? Now don’t they use their cell phone or laptop, iPad and such? Where are the new letters like those wonderful letters that authors used to write to each other? Do they still? Is it only email, Instagram and twitter now? Paper is patient – it needs to be.
