Poem for Poets and Storytellers United
I witnessed a fight between parents and their adult child It was sad and I had to write a poem about it
Forgiveness
They spoke a
different language
not hearing each other’s needs
Flowering had ceased
petals dropped off its stem
Glory gone but not forgotten
Ruptured roots forever intertwined
under a blanket of silent memories
of cuddles and conversations
of laughs on long summer nights
that sprinkled silver on their souls
Now a stream of sadness
seeps deep into the damp earth
Shriveled petals of ego on top
as the right to be wanted
is jumbled and muddled
by the want to be right
The decay of dreams begins
In this raw dirt of reality
re-enter the cycle of love
by scattering sweet seeds
of gentle forgiveness
to exile unexamined expectations
to accept our humanness
to erase the winter
Seeds watered with warm words
caressed by a waft of wind
waiting for the dawn of spring
when the sun tentatively touches
the new expecting earth
from which flowers sprout
in red, yellow and purple
and laughter is heard again
in the back garden where
souls bask in a golden glow
Beautiful imagery of generation gap leading to generation fight. The fight between parents and their adult child brings about 'ruptured roots' and 'shriveled, fallen petals. There's need for new seeds, caressed with water and love to restore the harmony.
ReplyDeleteYour first 2 lines speaks volumes Marja.
ReplyDeleteWho hasn't been hurt by the actions or words of another? The act that hurt or offended might always be with us, but forgiveness can lessen its grip and help free us from the control of the person who harmed us.
Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt us.

I loved those first 2 lines as well.
DeleteWonderful metaphors to convey the full reality of this sad situation and the hope of recovery.
ReplyDeleteA poignant poem, Marja, which conveys a difficult situation through beautiful imagery, particularly the ‘Ruptured roots forever intertwined / under a blanket of silent memories’, the ‘stream of sadness’ seeping ‘deep into the damp earth’, and the uplifting lines:
ReplyDelete‘Seeds watered with warm words
caressed by a waft of wind
waiting for the dawn of spring’.
Sad indeed but I love the optimism in your words.
ReplyDeleteGreat work, Marja. Such an extended, on-target metaphor is definitely beyond my ability. If anyone ever asks me, "What's metaphor?" I'll refer them here.
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful and hopeful.
ReplyDeleteNature provides us with the means to turn despair into joy if given the chance. A thought-provoking piece Marja.
ReplyDeleteI like the line about the raw dirt of reality and to know that plants and people can bounce back with the right ingredients of care.
ReplyDeleteOh, this catches on a raw spot. So easy to forget to be as careful of those closest to us as to those further away. :)
ReplyDeletegreat metaphors for a sad and difficult situation.
ReplyDeleteit's sad that parent and child speak a different language, did not listen. Forgiveness is a way to repair the relationship. hope there will be laughter soon in the back garden.
"and laughter is heard again
ReplyDeletein the back garden where
souls bask in a golden glow" beautiful ending to the hurt.
All roots get tested eventually. Hopefully spring will arrive and bring new healthy growth for all the plants in the garden.
ReplyDeleteI love that you end on a note of peace .... there is something terribly wrong / raw / out of sync when adult children fight with their parents. A beautifully composed poem.
ReplyDeleteSadly, this kind of situation seems to be going around more and more these days. I was reading an article about a couple that refuses to speak to each other because of how differently they feel about certain political situation. It's a terrible deal. I hope the seeds of your poem bloom spread into their hearts. Forgiveness, in some cases, is very difficult to grow. But if the soil and seed work together, it will happen.
ReplyDeleteIndeed Marja those seeds of discord now need the fertilizer of forgiveness for warm loving dialogues to sprout
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog today
much love...
Love dies from neglect, and the cold winds of grudge.
ReplyDeleteI like your ending too and the hope of peace that it brings.
ReplyDeleteDiscord between parents and their adult children is the saddest thing...

Hi Marja - wonderful poem with an evocative image to match. Poignant tones ... it's life - but things do work out eventually ... you've expressed it perfectly ... and hopefully they can forgive each other - all the best - Hilary
ReplyDeleteTHis made me think of the arguments I had with my grandparents when I was a teenager. They were from a different time and didn't really understand their weird grandchild, even though they had taken me into their home. It was tough sometimes but we always came around to each other.
ReplyDeleteBut largely, I was a stupid kid.
A beautiful write, Marja. I apologize for not visiting your site in so long a time but with the world upside down I have had days where I simply could not write myself nor visit other sites. But good to see you are still posting somewhat. Hope you and your family are doing well. Take good care.
