Monday Mural by Sami
It is the picture of the late Parihaka elder Whero O Te Rangi Bailey. Also known as Poppy. She was a Maori master weaver and textile artist. She was also a High School teacher and counsellor. Her knowledge of Te Reo Maori, waiata (Maori song) and poi were highly regarded.
Her facial tattoo is called Tā moko. Tā moko represents the wearer's family heritage and social status—it is believed that the receiver visits a spiritual realm where they encounter their ancestors, returning as a new person.
This is such a wonderful mural. Warm and thoughtful.
ReplyDelete...we vacationed in Maui for several years and saw a lot of Maori inspired art. It looks like Poppy's weathered face could tell many stories. A global art project for peace is a fabulous idea. Thanks Marja for sharing, take care and have a wonderful week.

Very realistic, great artist and a nice way to honour the Maori elder. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals.
ReplyDeleteHay murales que si son auténtica manifestación de Arte, y es bueno localizarlo y protegerlos. No sea que aparezcan otros y los tapen. En este caso el resultado es sumamente bello.
