Mural Tomtit

 For Monday Murals by Sami

Above is a mural of the Tomtit, a bird which lives in the forest and is endemic to New Zealand. Most birds in NZ are endemic because NZ is a cluster of Islands. When Captain Cook arrived in the 1770's he found that the bird sound was deafening.

Tit in the name Tomtit means small animal or object. The Maori name for this bird is Miromiro. This means 'to twist rapidly' or 'to move quickly'. This bird has a sharp sight and can spot an insect from 10 meters away.

The Tomtit above is from the South Island with its yellow chest. The North Island Tomtit has a white chest.

  1. ...Marja, you found a bright mural. Tomtit is new for me, but we have similar little birds here. Take care and have a wonderful week.

  2. Interesting. Cute, but I wouldn´t want one around!
My Little Niece is like that, deafening LOUD. Not so cute, though...

  3. Ik heb nog nooit van een Tomtit gehoord. Grappige naam. De Maori naam is nóg mooier.

  5. Nice mural and bird. The "wagtail" here in Australia behaves in a similar way, moving quickly , wagging the tail and spots insects at a distance. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Marja.

  6. The birds of New Zealand are very intriguing, and I have tried a couple of times to arrage a birding trip to see them, but it’s just such an enormous distance to travel that I can’t seem to do it. Nice image.

  7. Never heard of a Tomtit before, but this is a stunning mural and great info about the bird, too.

  8. Miromiro, klinkt als een vogeldeuntje. Een insect zien op tien meter afstand doe ik het vogeltje niet na. Zelfs niet met een verderkijker. Een prachtige mural!
