Mural on piece of berlin Wall

Monday Murals  by Sami

I so enjoy looking for murals. When I research them, I learn so much.

I saw this mural at Rauora Park in Christchurch City. I found out the mural is made by Nadia Valeska. It was painted on two pieces of the Berlin wall as they were gifted to Christchurch. Nadia was born in West Germany and grew up in Christchurch. She moved to Berlin in 2015

For Nadia the fall of the Berlin Wall meant a reunion of people. People embraced each other as tokens of love and freedom.

I love this as I am a big hugger. Unfortunately, because of Covid the amount of hugging decreased significantly and that is a shame as hugs make us healthier and happier.

We had a period of increased hugging here as well. I remember I walked one early morning after the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 on the parking in front of our charity. There were not many cars yet. A lady was standing there in the middle, looking lost and confused. I walked up to her and asked if she was all right. She said she had lost her husband not long ago and now she had lost her house. I asked can I give you a hug and she nodded. I gave her a big hug.
Then she stammered 'Can I please have another one' This was the first of many and we also set out with a few women to give free hugs to the people in Lyttelton. This is where the epi center was and the hugs were well received. I still have the felted heart we received from someone in Lyttelton. Thousands of them were created by the group 'Lyttel Stiches' in response to the Canterbury earthquake on 22 February 2011. They are now displayed in Te Papa in Wellington

  2. I wonder how many fragents of the Berlin wall have been distributed around the world?

  3. I remember the day the Wall fell. I love that you have researched this mural, which is part of two pieces of the wall. The artist is amazing. Yes, hugging is good. Maybe we can get back to it now that Covid is less prevalent.

  6. Wonderful post. Just yesterday I met up with a "new" colleague. We got to know each other a couple of weeks ago at a seminar. She grew up in East Germany, me in the West. She was only 11 when the wall fell, me 17. Can you believe in railway there are still differences between East and West?! (our company is a daughter of Deutsche Bahn).
I am quite an introvert. She gave me a hug when we parted. Guess I can call her a friend (we met up after work the second time now).
So nice of you to step up to the lost lady. Most people just walk by, "blind" to the needs of others.
Glad there are some who do not!
I am small, yet especially even smaller, elderly women ask me for help at the grocery store, hilarious, but cute!

  8. Dear Marja,
this is a beautiful mural with meaning. When I come to Christchurch City (chances are good for 2024) I will be happy to see the mural in person ❤️ It's wonderful that you give hugs and offer joy and comfort. I'm more of a tree hugger than a people hugger, but that makes also sense, nature needs a lot more love than it gets...
Thank you for visiting my blog!
All the best from Austria, Traude

  10. Ik herinner me de dag dat de muur viel. Korte tijd daarna ging mijn broer naar Berlijn voor het concert van Pink Floyd. Wat een goed initiatief om gedeelten ervan elders in de wereld te plaatsen. Ontroerend om te lezen: "Can i please have another one?' Je voelde precies aan wat de vrouw nodig had.
