Rosemarie from Poets and Storytellers united asked us the write a poem starting with Why
Howling wolf (Photo Credit : pxhere)
I didn't know what question to ask and came on a website with questions people ask in Google. This is one of them and I became interested in the wolf. In Europe the wolf is protected. When I came back home to the Netherlands recently, many worried about the wolf having to live in their country. Wolves however play a very important part in the ecosystem. You can read more about it here and here
Why does the wolf howl at the moon?
Some say he sang his song
to bring the moon into being
but for the wolf the moon
is just a slippery strand of pepper
or a serene light in the night
When the wolf howls
he connects to his pack
The moon listens to his lament
How he was pursued
by human predators
Yes, he did eat grandma
and some sheep as well
and we must envelope
the farmer with love, for his loss
while giving space to the wolf
Once we lived in harmony
than we took control
like madmen we took it all
to build castles and cars
We became paupers
dressed up like kings
living on an overheated planet
with enraged currents in toxic rivers
When the wolf doesn’t howl no more
mother nature will be mourning
We belong to her exquisite system
A divine dance of natural order
Feel the earth in your bones again
Surf on the swerving wind
Move with the pulsating moon
Break down your concrete walls
Demagnetize power and prestige,
Replace this plastic place and
welcome the wolf and the natural world
or....take more from mother earth
when she slips into poverty
we slip into Armageddon
Very powerful last lines, Marja, and of course the idea so relevant to how we have, particularly in more modern times, failed to see Mother Earth and its creatures as interwoven with us.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful poem!
ReplyDeletewe must envelope / the farmer with love, for his loss / while giving space to the wolf - oh absolutely... love the poem, Marja...I have also been writing about climate so this resonates...definitely need to demagnetize power to solve this...!!!
ReplyDeleteNice observation. For a wolf the Moon is a serene light in the night.
ReplyDeleteI'm still wondering why the wolf howls at the moon like a town crier. I'm glad you mentioned that it ate grandma. Here's my wolf poem: https://looseleafnotes.com/2022/06/when-no-one-cries-wolf/
ReplyDeletehaha yes he did eat grandma didn't he. Oh I meant with 'when he howls he connects to hi pack' to say that he just talks to the others. Moon or not
DeleteAs a direct descendant of little red riding hood my family is agin wolves:) especially the two legged variety.!
ReplyDeletelol
DeleteHumans and wolves can get along fine, if wolf populations are kept low and far from places where humans want to live.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, wolves are actually afraid of people. They hide and are nocturnal anyway. So nothing to worry about
DeleteI like to howl at the moon, my fangs come out when it's full and I can bite ladies on their necks. I've not eaten a grandma yet.
Delete..
Ah you are a werewolf Sorry we don't need any of them Jim lol
DeleteIt is powerful poem. Love the image too
ReplyDeleteWolf-howls are mournful sounds, which echo exactly the grieving human's horror at the way Nature's balance has been thrown out of kilter...
ReplyDeleteYes, he did eat grandma
ReplyDeleteand some sheep as well
It cannot be more chilling than that. Love your write Marja! Love the humour.!
Hank
Love the message in your poem ... wolves are full of mystery. They have stories to tell, if only we listened.
ReplyDeleteThe howling of the moon has stories to tell ( melancholic though). A good question you chose to answer . I liked it
ReplyDeleteHi Marja - this is a brilliant narrative poem on life ... so good (and sad) to read - now when the foxes howl during the night here I'll remember your poem - we are all linked and we all should be howling at the life humans are creating for so many. Thank you - cheers Hilary
