Mural of the New Zealander Edmund Hillary in Colombo Street Christchurch
Artists: Cole Ferrand, 22, and Jacob Root, 23 from Christchurch
for Monday Murals by Sami
"We knocked the bastard off" were the words of Edmund Hillary when he reached the top of Mount Everest together with Tenzing Norgay on 29 May 1953. They were the first.
In 1958 Edmund went to the South Pole. In 1985, he flew with Neil Armstrong to the North Pole. He was the first person to set food on the North Pole and the South Pole.
Of course New Zealand is proud of him and therefore he appears on the NZ $5 note

He climbed the tallest peak on the 30th of January 1948

ReplyDeleteHe sure deserves the honor!
ReplyDeleteGreat mural of a great adventurer! Tschüß und einen schönen Abend aus D
ReplyDeleteAs a Star Trek fan this is a big thing to me but in one of the series there is a Federation starship named the Edmund Hillary. I know for most people the names of fictional starships is not a big thing but I think its cool.
ReplyDeleteGood mural, it has to take great talent to do a person with that detail
ReplyDeleteA very nicely done mural.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful tribute to Edmund Hilary. He totally deserves to be on murals and currency notes.
