A poem for Poets and Storytellers United The prompt is: What’s the most important step a person can take?
The step onto a leaf
I stepped down from this world
where I had to be someone.
I shrank and shrank so small
I stepped onto a leaf
it floated across a quiet lake,
and the wind played an adagio
so loud, so tender,
it swept me off my feet.
Dragonflies danced,
skimming the silver skin of the water,
and their grace
touched the deepest part of me.
The fish leaped,
their splash a wild heartbeat
I felt so alive.
The beauty was too much to hold.
It pressed against my chest,
spilling past the edges of my being.
I grew human sized again,
but I was changed.
I no longer needed to own beauty,
no longer tried to scoop
the moon's golden spread from the lake.
I knew it would slip through my fingers.
Instead, I held the leaf
and its quiet wisdom:
You must become small
to understand the great.
And like the tide
we follow the rhythm of wonder
Nice write. For some reason it reminds me of the Yugoslav movie Underground.
ReplyDeleteHi Marja - the leaf does usually live a good life - full and to the point. As you so rightly say we follow the rhythm of wonder - wonderful poem - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely wonderful! How wise you are! I agree that such a step is supremely important.
ReplyDeleteIts imagery lingers like the echo of that wind’s adagio
ReplyDeleteSo dreamy. I think we all went with you on that magic carpet leaf ride and freed our minds for a bit.
ReplyDeleteLove the symbolism of being on the leaf and then holding the leaf, making this truly a remarkable journey.
ReplyDeleteLovely, Marja. I think also that the great should become small in order to understand that the microcosm is as important as the macrocosm!
ReplyDeleteWhat magical imagery - the wonders of nature with a lovely feeling of Wonderland too - Jae
ReplyDeleteA gentle ride on the tide of wonder. Lovely !
ReplyDeleteHi Marja. Instead of holding a leaf my only inspiration is from sitting here watching the four walls. And reading and writing some poems.
ReplyDeleteThat's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLovely meditation!
