Inner Compass

Poets and story tellers United asked : take inspiration from the title of songs in Florence and the Machine’s new album, Everybody Scream. I used Perfume and Milk

Inner Compass

What were you meant to do?
It is written in the scriptures
of your being.
Peel away some layers.
Remove the debris
of expectations.

Devote yourself to
what is carved in your bones.

Still, the world looks away.

Droplets of doubt
weave into a mist of thoughts.
People already have
Perfume and milk
cars and coffee machines,
holidays and heroes.
Do they need me?

Trust.
You are part of the horizon
you move toward.
Pierce through the fog
knowingly.

One day
the rain will put on his bow,
the sky will open,
your spine will straighten.
You are what you do so much,
you dress yourself in it,
and the world
starts looking.

  1. I love how you manage to convey both a sense of inner peace and acceptance as well as the insight to seek what calls 'us' (and thank you too for your kind comments this week) Jae

  2. Truth to oneself is perhaps the most important lessons life can teach us. Nicely done.

  3. A beautiful and introspective poem, Marja. I like the by-and-by reference to the prompt giving it the appropriate emphasis it deserves :-)

  5. These lines are a great centrepiece:

    People already have
    Perfume and milk
    cars and coffee machines,
    holidays and heroes.

  6. I've always enjoyed your poetry, but – I don't think it's just my imagination – you seem to have taken a quantum leap lately! Like other recent pieces, and perhaps best of them all so far, this is full of both deep wisdom and brilliant use of language.
