Living in the In-between

The prompt for Poets and Storytellers United is "be inspired by the concept of “in between”.

Living in the In-between

Some days I swallow the light,
let it burn small holes in my heart.
Other days I release it,
watch it find wings
and rise above the clouds.

Sweet as sugar words
fall softly like glitter on cupcakes.
But scratch the surface of trust
and sarcasm sprouts
quicker than wild weed,
cutting through
the cake of pride.

So, eat my words!
The ones that fail
to grow sometimes,
yet hang like fairy lights
among the stars,
glowing only
when connection calls.

Some days
I perform in the limelight,
bow to the ghost of an audience,
only to descend the next moment
and disappear into the quiet
hum of the forest.

Living in an alien world,
I play the game
of hide and seek
the rare one,
married
to the in between.

  1. I return the compliments you gave my piece for this week: this is so beautiful, so spiritual, so deep! I also like the rueful acknowledgment of human failings (without beating yourself up too much about them) and the wit. [Typo – darned autocorrect, obviously! – you have 'descent' but I'm sure it should be 'descend'.]

  2. I love how you build the story verse by verse and then end at such a clear ending - also love the fairy lights and cakes! Jae

  3. The inbetween is indefinite, can't make up the mind. Somedays.

  5. I am always so impressed by the images you are able to paint with words, dear Marja!
I see the winged light, I see the cupcakes, glitter falling on them... The cake of pride, the fairy lights, the bow in the limelight to the ghost audience... all these are now images in my mind that you have drawn with your words. Salvador Dalí (or another talented painter) could create a magnificent painting from this...

  8. We all live in the inbetween - some days are elevating carrying us forward, some days pull us back but most days are amorphous - the inbetween - like a seesaw.

  11. If the in-between is cakes and fairy lights, I'm all for staying there.
