A poem for Poets and Storytellers United written to the prompt "find inspiration on your bookshelf."
Paper Wings
My books carry
stories,
lifting me on
paper wings
to faraway
places
where forests
hum,
where lakes
hold mirrors,
where skies,
smartened with stars,
smile.
And places
where wisdom
rests between
covers.
I listen till
their roots
thread through
my mind,
waking me
to build new
castles
of light.
In books of
poetry
I wander
metaphors,
waiting in the
tide
until they pull
me under
into a sea
of sparkling
whispers
and love letter
salt.
Titles tease,
tug,
time ticks,
until words
find me,
leaping from
shelves,
from hidden
doors,
into my life.

This poem could become close to my heart since books are the cornerstone of my life. How I would live without them I have no idea - and I have no intention of finding out!

ReplyDeleteWriters have the power to make the familiar feel new and the unfamiliar feel understood—and you have that power
ReplyDeleteYour images resonate, roots threading and lakes mirroring skies. You beautifully describe the inner journey we take within the pages of a good book.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely poem. Reminds me of my carpet cleaning I just got. Also, my mother's name is Marja, and you're the only other person I've seen with that name. Bless you!
ReplyDeleteBooks as paper wings--what an enchanting image!
ReplyDeleteMarja, your words beautifully captured the magic of books.

ReplyDeleteI love "wandering metaphors" and your final stanza is what I do when forced to leave a book to reenter life.
ReplyDeleteYou transformed books into living breathing tour guides ... I love the bookish journey you shared.
ReplyDeleteBooks taking you to faraway places and lives Good poem
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll read my books someday. You'll be transported to Guatemala and Sedona, AZ, among other locals. Happy armchair travel and reading!
