The shape of my sky

The prompt for What's Going On? is :Use mathematical terms and images to poeticize an aspect of life or experience.

The Shape of My Sky

Sometimes my mind spirals,
mapping out a thousand possibilities
for why my life refuses to align.
I thought it would be a constant,
yet the variables kept shifting.

Then I notice the invisible math trap:
our instinct to balance every ledger,
even though life rarely evens out.
Losses accumulate,
and hope begins to seem improbable.

Still, there are moments
when you rise to the top of the bell curve,
its gentle arc carrying you upward,
where crescent moons and quiet stars
reclaim your sky.

  1. A wonderful poem with so many mathematical terms worked in seemlessly.. I love the idea of rising to the top of the bell curve!

Beautifully put! Need everything balance? Does it not help at times to rise up into the skies?

  3. ...I don't need mathematical terms and images to enjoy life's experiences.

  4. This is lovely, Marja, especially your closing stanza. Thank heaven for moons and quiet stars. I spend a lot of time looking at the sky..........a Sky Show going on all the time up there to keep us Looking Up!

  5. What a beautiful thought - the mathematics of the heavens and stars - how reassuring that is - Jae

  8. The mathematical balance of my life seems to have come together well, despite a few unsolved equations along the way!

  9. Life in mathematical terms has been beautifully expressed Marja. It's true that balancing doesn't always work properly and so much better to rely on the 'gentle curve' of the 'bell curve' that helps you rise and be in the comfort of a vastness.

  10. That last stanza is beautiful, Marja! Maybe we shouldn't look for solvable equations.
