Coromandel North Island NZ

For That's my world

On our holiday we stayed not far from the Coromandel in the North of the North island. A beautiful area with many great beaches and wild inland.

We started at Thames and had a look at the butterfly garden, which is small but beautiful

We drove over the Tapu-Coroglen road, which is mainly a gravel Road through the middle of the Coromandel range. The scenery is stunning and makes me think of the West Coast of the South Island with all these fern trees.

From this road we walked.to this +/- 1200 year old Kauri tree which is the 15th largest tree on the Peninsula.

When we came to the other side we had a gorgeous 1 1/2 hour return walk to the cathedral cove. Here a stunning view from the track.

A stone next to Cathedral Cove
Hot water beach. Here you can get a shovel, dig a hole in the beach and lay down in the wonderful hot water. We passed as it poured down with rain when we arrived so we had a coffee next to this place.

The Karangahake Gorge

Between Waihi and Paeroa is the karangahake Gorge, where you certainly have to go to when you are in the area. It has gorgeous tracks over swing bridges, through mining tunnels (window walk) and  nature is gobsmucking here. We went here for a day and walked some tracks.

Track over the old railway through a kilometre long brick-lined tunnel

I love walking along the river

Can't get enough of wild rivers

A walk through the rocks
Passing over to the other side on a swing bridge

I've got so many pictures I could fill a book with it but they will turn up now and than on my blog. There is more to come though from other places.

  3. I confess that my jaw has fallen to the ground and I am drooling all over my keyboard. What beautiful pictures. I too love wild rivers. I would have thought that it would have been fun sitting in the hot water at the beach while it rained.

  9. These are fantastic photos. if you were there about 30 years ago, you might have snap my photo. My husband was doing his PhD research and I was helping him. So Coromandels have a special place in my heart.

So sad, you have more after shocks.

I hope not, I would love to walk through such beautiful lands without worry of those critters!! LOL I'm in the US and yes we have snakes and I don't like them!! Thanks if you are able to answer!
