Part 1 - The House of Perception
Perception is not just noticing
it is a magic world,
where every glance,
every sensation,
is folded into the tapestry
of what we call reality.
We use the threads we weave
to predict the world ahead,
tracing patterns
that mirror what we believe.
Sometimes we test and adjust,
sculptors shaping the clay
of our house of knowledge.
Other times,
we grow fond of a sunlit room
furnished with cherished ideas.
When the world rattles the windows,
we draw the curtains,
guarding the safety
of our inner home.
We live,
surrounded by our stories,
our maps and our illusions
this magic we call perception,
the house we build for ourselves.
Part 2 Inviting the New
Exploring new ideasis like bringing home new furniture.
Sometimes they don't fit
with what we have.
A mix of rejection
and curiosity stirs.
We feel the clash,
then the comfort
of the new chair,
where we sit and watch
the old pieces in quiet.
We pause,
seeking clarity in the fog.
Slowly, harmony
finds the rooms
we thought were fixed,
and slowly our fog clears.
Excitement rises.
In the end,
our house expands,
we expand.
free.
breathing in the space
between expectation
and surprise,
where truth unpacks
its boxes.
Perception is everything I suppose, but perception changes with time and circumstance and we adjust accordingly. You capture it very well in this verse that serves to remind us that unwelcome change many in the end be the warm embrace we all seek.

We all perceive life — our own life — in different ways. I loved the wordplay and the metaphors you used to express your view of it in this “poem of life.” Beautifully written. The picture complements it tastefully.
ReplyDeleteHet doet me denken aan het Engelse spreekwoord: 'A clean kitchen is a sign of a wasted life.'
ReplyDeleteA reflective poem, Marja that resonates with me, these lines especially:
ReplyDelete‘we grow fond of a sunlit room
furnished with cherished ideas.
When the world rattles the windows,
we draw the curtains,
guarding the safety
of our inner home’.
I love the idea that ‘In the end, our house expands, we expand’ and truth unpacking its boxes.
"When the world rattles the windows,
ReplyDeletewe draw the curtains"
This is soooo interesting
Much♡love
Nice metaphor!
ReplyDeleteLife is about perceptions but, sometimes we need a shift in perception to truly see. The following lines were my favorite.
ReplyDeletewe grow fond of a sunlit room
furnished with cherished ideas.
I loved the first part and was reluctant to read on, but I ended up liking the second half just as much if not more; powerful finish!
ReplyDeletePerception is how we mold our world...
ReplyDelete"tracing patterns
that mirror what we believe"
is key, but there also lies the danger of being stuck.
Which is why we need to question even our perception to be able to find a new way.
Hi Marja - yes perception can be important ... but actually it's people and our connections with them ... or the memories that we have in our own homes ... excellent poem - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this thoughtful poem, Marja. Very well put together--and I thought the same thing as "Anonymous" above--the second part is every bit as good as the first, if not better!
ReplyDeleteSo much wisdom woven through your poem, a lovely write .. lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy wife is a nest tweaker -- every adding removing moving editing the domestic furnishings. It's not much different from the way I write poems: Let's add something new to the old and listen for applause or bronx cheers from the dead. Perception 'tis made and addled so!
ReplyDeletePerception is all, the foundation on which the rest is created.
